When Dick Vitale basically declared during this weekend's Duke-North Carolina broadcast that Tyler Hansbrough displayed the most desire of any player he has seen in all the years he has been covering college basketball, for a moment -- a fleeting one -- I thought I was smoking crack again.
Did I hear that correctly? Boop-boop, went the TiVo. Yeah, damn, Vitale did say that.
Vitale's television career goes back to the late 1970s, which means he has likely seen such collegiate basketball brilliance as Larry Bird, Christian Laettner, Magic Johnson, Danny Manning, Patrick Ewing, Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas, Larry Johnson, Chris Mullin, Tim Duncan, Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson.

And Hansbrough has more "desire" than those greats?

Was that before or after he gave Coach K his verbal hand job?
Oooh, another crack at the Dukies. I can't believe you forgot how they:
1. Get all their games on TV
2. Get favorable calls at home
3. Are the subject of nonstop praise from announcers for theri selfless play (sans McRoberts), leadership and hard work.
(insert brotherly love comment next)
The purpose of the article was not to blast Dork Vitale for falling in love with Hansbrough (every commentator is in love with Ms. O'Connor), but to point out how average he is compared to NCAA greats. You obviously forgot to click the link before your comment.
Hansbrough is less than memorable. He's the NCAA's David Eckstein, if you will.
When Hansbrough wins it will make 8 out of 11 years that a player from Duke, Carolina or Texas has won the award. I am not say that there aren't great players who play at those 3 schools but much like the Hiesman the criteria for winning the award seems to change to favor players from those 3 schools.
I would Take Beasley and Love over Hansbrough anyday.
Ditto Michael Beasley as NCAA POY. His year was better then Durant with half the fan fare....I guess that is what happens when you play for an also-ran like K-State. Watching K-State run over USC last night it would not surprise me if K-State beats Wisconsin and moves on to the Sweet 16.
